We’ve kept it alive with forced induction and hybridization, but even these measures won’t save the thirstiest of internal combustion engines from its doom. On its way out, however, the twelve-cylinder is performing at its best. Only hydrogen and electric powertrains are smoother, and only ultra boosted motors are more potent. For these reasons, the V12 has been a natural fit for full-size luxury sedans like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
