“Needles and Pins“ is a cover of a song written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono, the later one started out as a helping hand of famous recordproducer Phil Spector and married Cher. Jackie DeShannon reached to no. 84 in 1963 with the song. Smokie’s (or Smokey) version was a bigger succes. The Biritish group was formed in 1963 and started out as The Yen. After Chris Norman joined as frontman they changed the bandname many times but succes stayed out. When they teamed up with Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, famous of their songs for The Sweet, Mud and Suzi Quatro, they started naming themselves Smokey. The release of their second album catapulted their succesful carreer. “If I Think You Know How To Love Me“ was a big hit and others follwed including “Lving Next Door To Alice“, “Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone“, “It’s Your Life“ and ’Needles and Pins“. This is a second performance in Toppop, this time before a chroma key. This Toppop recording was first broadcast on October 22, 1977.
