Tavares - TopPop Interview (Raw material) - 02-01-1978 TopPop

A good tv-director does not immediately make a good interviewer. This footage shows TopPop director Bert van der Veer trying to nail the USA R&B group Tavares into a genre of music. That’s why we decided not to edit this more or less embarrassing interview of the five brothers Tavares, so you can decide for yourself what you want to make of it. That’s also the reason you will see both takes that were recorded early January before their new hit ’The Ghost Of Love’ was released. They talk about a new film in which they are featured with the song ’More Than A Woman’. This song, penned by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb of the BeeGees for the soundtrack to the film ’Saturday Night Fever’., became a big hit worldwide. The film was not yet released at the time of this interview in the Netherlands. It had just been released in the USA (December 14, 1977) and would become one of the best selling albums of all time, worldwide. This interview was done just after they performed their recent hit ’The Ghost Of Love’ on TopPop on January 2, 1978: Tavares (also known as The Tavares Brothers) is an American R&B, funk and soul music group composed of five Cape Verdean-American brothers. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, they would later move to New Bedford, Massachusetts. Tavares is: • Butch - Feliciano Tavares, born 18 May 1948. • Chubby - Antone Lee Tavares, born 2 June 1945. • Pooch - Arthur Lee Tavares, born 12 November 1943. • Ralph - Ralph Viera Tavares, born 10 December 1942. • Tiny - Perry Lee Tavares, born 24 October 1949. 1975 turned out to be their most successful year chartwise, with a Top 40 Pop album (In the City), the No. 25 hit “Remember What I Told You to Forget“, and their biggest hit, the Top 10 Pop/No. 1 R&B smash “It Only Takes a Minute“, which was later successfully covered by both Jonathan King and Take That, and sampled by Jennifer Lopez. They parlayed this success into a spot as an opening act for The Jackson 5. KC and The Sunshine Band was also on this tour. “Minute“ was followed by a string of hits: “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel“ (1976), “Don’t Take Away the Music“ (1976), and “Whodunit“ (1977, another No. 1 R&B hit).
