Videotape with Idioteque beat - Hidden syncopation revealed!

This was inspired by WARRENMUSIC’s discovery that Radiohead’s ’Videotape’ may in fact be secretly syncopated. The idea is that the chordal rhythm heard throughout is actually being played on the upbeat instead of the downbeat, as it appears to most listeners. The reason we hear it this way is because there is nothing in the song to contextualise the downbeats as upbeats. This video adds context to the upbeats by using the drums from Idioteque. It’s like the musical equivalent of an optical illusion. I could never properly flip my perspective to hear the song “correctly“ until doing this so I hope this upload helps unlock the song for others. It’s still a bit of work to latch onto the new beat if you are familiar with the original but once your brain flips the song is an entirely new experience. My advice is to listen from the start and focus all of your attention on the Idioteque drums. The song should then slide into place around it.
