“It’s no use.” The last words of the American actor Marlon Brando made to his long time friend and fellow actor Karl Malden over the phone. Despite his immense talent as an actor, Brando became increasingly difficult to manage and had earned a reputation as a “bad boy“ for his public outbursts and antics, on and off the screen. “There’s a line in ’The Wild One’ where Johnny snarls, ’Nobody tells me what to do.’ That’s exactly how I’ve felt all my life,” Brando once said. Late in his life, Brando became a recluse. He required oxygen and was morbidly obese and frequently in pain, but refused to let nurses or doctors see him at his home. He had refused permission for tubes carrying oxygen to be inserted into his lungs, which was the only way to prolong his life. He died of respiratory failure from pulmonary fibrosis.
