I love the original story behind this song and how it was written.
According to Ian Gillan, a reporter had approached him, Ritchie Blackmore, and other members of the band on a bus for an interview.
One of the questions was, “How do you write your songs?“
Ian said: “Usually Ritchie starts out with a riff and I start riffing vocals over the top of it.“
At that moment, Richie grabbed his guitar and started to chunk out the verses to Highway Star.
Ian chimed in with a vocal over the top and, in very short order, out came Highway Star!
I don’t know if this is true or not, but I can’t imagine what that reporter did when Ian started screaming out those high notes, ha, ha!
