Sputnik 1 - Earth’s First Artificial Satellite

On 4 October 1957, a Sputnik 8K71PS rocket launched the Earth’s first artificial satellite - Sputnik 1. The satellite was a metal sphere (58 cm in diameter) with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. Sputnik 1 was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit and burned up into the atmosphere on 4 January 1958. The iconic signal was broadcasted until 26 October 1957.
