Ableton Ambient - GENERATIVE DRONES using the follow action function

(^ get the song here) By using the “follow action” function in Ableton Live to randomly trigger midi clips, you can create interesting generative music and drones. Here, I chose the notes and made the sounds, but the computer is deciding the arbitrary order to play them in. It’s not really a song as much as an aimless drifting idea. Maybe like the kind of scenery you could see from a window. (Familiar, but always changing - like life.) The elements are really simple, but by repeating out of order they can go on and on without looping. That’s the thing about these kind of generative systems. They tend to move just enough to not become redundant. But, they are static enough to fall into the background. Brian Eno has a lot of good info about generative music in his book “ A Year with Swollen Appendices.” I really recommend it if you can find a copy. Anyway, I’ll put a kind of long recording of it here in case anyone needs a minute to catch their breath. Hope
