Danish Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard was treated to a hero’s return to Copenhagen on Wednesday (27th July). Thousands of cycling fans lined Vinegaard’s route from Copenhagen Airport to the city’s Radhuspladsen main square. As is tradition for returning victorious Danish sports stars, Vingegaard was treated to an official tribute at Copenhagen City Hall and a round of “City Hall pancakes.“ Twenty-five-year-old Vingegaard joked that after three weeks of racing, has hand hurt more than his legs “after high-fiving so many people all the way to Radhuspladsen.“ “I think it’s hard to put into words. There’s people standing for as long as the eye can see, and it’s absolutely amazing and very touching that so many people turned up,“ he added. A former fish factory worker, Vingegaard dethroned defending champion Tadej Pogacar becaming the first Dane to win the Tour since Bjarne Riis achieved the feat in 1996.
