Georg Muffat Armonico Tributo Sonata No.2 in G minor

Georg Muffat (1653--1704) was a French-born German Baroque composer who was instrumental in bringing the French and Italian styles to the German-speaking countries and combining them to create a new style. This would eventually pave the way for the later German cosmopolitan styles of Telemann, Handel, and Bach. The set of Armonico Tributo sonatas were published in 1682 after his return from Rome, where he had been in contact with Corelli, and in particular, his concerti grossi. As a teenager, Muffat studied with Lully. It’s this personal connection with the leading figures of French and Italian music that must have prompted Muffat to write these pieces, which show influences from both.
