Великий Новгород As part of St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre’s Festival of the White Nights, the company and their leader Maestro Valery Gergiev traveled to Veliky Novgorod for a special performance in the town’s ancient Kremlin of Rimsky-Korskakov’s opera Sadko. Based on a local fairytale, Sadko is the story of a guitar player (guslar) from Novgorod who leaves the city to find his fame and fortune and along the way has many adventures before successfully returning to his home town a wealthy man.
