Shine - Sandra Bouza - (Live at COHO Studio)
Have you ever felt the frustration of knowing you have so much to offer but you are not being heard? ’Shine’ is from my new album ’A Sound In The Dark’ available now at and everywhere you listen to music.
This is one of the older songs on the album. I wrote this about ten years ago living in Vancouver. It encapsulates the frustration of knowing that you are not being heard and that you have so much to offer and to contribute, but you are being denied a voice. For me, in my own story, there is also a responsibility that I have to take in owning my part in not speaking up. In falling into a silent role within a patriarchy. This is where the song fits for me, but really it is for anyone who feels like they are not being heard, and a reminder to not be afraid to take up space.

Lyrics - Shine
Can’t be angry in the daylight
Shadows just don’t seem to sit on the skin just right
Try the other, one for the sound, you aim for the single but you double the round
Bet it wasn’t easy was it, living underground
And you could not shine like you wanted to
Couldn’t talk about it, couldn’t figure it out
Couldn’t shine like you wanted to
And you stamp your feet black and blue
You couldn’t shine like you wanted to
And the stubborn fool lives on in you
You couldn’t shine like you wanted to
Now you are making up for old crimes
Born in rags and raised to riches
You got your doubts then they call you king for the day
So you, you count your blessings and you take your throne
Then they knock you down and send you home
Bet it wasn’t easy was it, going back across the threshold
And you could not shine like you wanted to
Couldn’t talk about it, couldn’t figure it out
Couldn’t shine like you wanted to
And you stamp your feet black and blue
You couldn’t shine like you wanted to
And the stubborn fool lives on in you
You couldn’t shine like you wanted to
Now you are making up for old crimes
Now you are making up for old crimes
You could not shine
And you could not shine like you wanted to
Couldn’t talk about it, couldn’t figure it out
Couldn’t shine like you wanted to
And you couldn’t shine like you wanted to
Couldn’t talk about it, couldn’t figure it out
Couldn’t shine like you wanted to
And you stamp your feet black and blue
You couldn’t shine like you wanted to
And the stubborn fool lives on in you
You couldn’t shine like you wanted to yeah
You couldn’t shine shine
Like you wanted to yeah
You couldn’t shine like you wanted to
Now you are making up for old crimes
