Abba - Ring, Ring

Bjorn, Benny and Stig wrote Ring, Ring for the Swedish selections of the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest. With the aid of their invaluable sound engineer Michael B. Tretow they borrowed some inspiration from legendary producer Phil Spector. The group achieved a sound that was completely new to Swedish pop music. It was the definitive sound of Abba! Neil Sedaka provided English lyrics with his partner Phil Cody. Unfortunately the jury - a mix of celebrities, musicians and journalists - voted them only third. Abba’s worldwide conquest would have to wait another year to commence. Bjorn recalls “We were really sickened by the result. We really were the best“! There was no doubt that Abba had the people’s vote. The English and Swedish versions of Ring, Ring were released as separate singles, and soon broke all Swedish records.
