The bet on the new ZIL-170 model, which the plant had been developing for many years, with the parallel production of old products, did not materialize. Developments on the ZIL-170, on which all efforts were thrown, were eventually transferred to the newly built KamAZ. As a result, ZIL was left with the old model ZIL-130 and two frozen projects ZIL-133 and ZIL-169, the development of which stopped at the initial stages. A new model was needed. In order to somehow expand and update the range, the ZIL-133 model was updated, however, in essence, it was the same old ZIL-130 model, only three-axle. After the release of ZIL-133, the plant returned to the development of ZIL-169. The project was going hard, since the plant was mastering for the first time a new diesel engine of its own design.
