In full: Rishi Sunak resigns as Tory leader in final speech as PM outside No10
Rishi Sunak has announced he will step down as Tory leader following the general election defeat once formal arrangements for a successor have taken place.
Speaking outside No 10, Mr Sunak addressed the nation saying “I am sorry”, adding: “I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility”.
Mr Sunak added: “This is a difficult day at the end of a number of difficult days but I leave this job honoured to have been your prime minister.”
