This Painting Will Make You Cringe

This piece is called The Irritating Gentleman by Berthold Woltze. Could there be a more fitting title? We’re placed on a train carriage barreling through the German countryside in 1874. Our eyes are immediately drawn to the young girl in the center of the painting. She’s dressed in all black and appears to be in mourning. Has she lost one or both of her parents? There’s a middle aged man leering over her who seems unfazed by her emotional state as well as her age. She looks directly at us as if pleading with us to help her. But what if she possessed something she could use to help her? Something that she carries with her everywhere and can fit in to the palm of her hand...
