Rio de Janeiro’s operations center declared a red level of danger due to heavy rains. After torrential rains, landslides and floods began, as a result of which 23 people died. The city was flooded in several places, and the flow of water was so strong that it swept away everything in its path, even trucks. As reported, the authorities fear that the number of victims may increase. In three hours, 35.8 centimeters of rain fell in the affected area - almost the same as in the previous month. The mayor’s office said in a statement that the downpours had led to “a large number of incidents and victims,“ and rescue and recovery efforts were ongoing. More than 30 landslides were also registered. The Rio de Janeiro state military fire brigade rescued about 70 people who were trapped or stuck. A young man died as a result of the collapse of a building in Chacara do Seu in the north of the city. Another person was killed by lightning in Sakuarem.
