On this day in 1940, the evacuation of Allied forces from Dunkirk ended as German forces captured the beach. Here is a British Movietone report covering the event. Lord Gort arrives back in London signaling that the evacuation of the BEF from Flanders is nearly completed. The epic withdrawal was carried out courageously by the many small vessels bringing British and French troops from the beaches. Planes fly over Dunkirk and everywhere fires rage. Bombs burst and the wreckage is everywhere apparent. Ships are wrecked in the harbor and a British destroyer passes a transport at high speed.
