In a surprising turn of events, 18 North Korean soldiers have reportedly deserted the Russian frontline in Ukraine just days after arriving. According to Ukraine’s public broadcaster, Suspilne, these troops were stationed in Russia’s Kursk and Bryansk regions, near the Ukrainian border, when they disappeared. Russian forces are now reportedly searching for the deserters, with commanders attempting to keep the incident under wraps.
This comes after Moscow received military support from Pyongyang, following an agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The North Korean soldiers were intended to bolster Russia’s defense efforts against Ukrainian forces in the region. Reports also indicated that these troops were expected to form part of a “special Buryat battalion.“
