’I loved you’ is a poem by Alexander Pushkin set to music by Alexander Dargomyzhsky, a 19th-century Russian composer, who bridged the gap in Russian opera composition between Mikhail Glinka and the later generation of The Five and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This poem is the best-known poem by Pushkin in Russia. Most probably Pushkin dedicated this poem to the countess Anna Alekseevna Andro-Olenina, daughter of the President of the Academy of Arts. Being his muze, Pushkin passionately addresses to her in other poems like ’Her eyes’, ‘Thou and you’ and ‘Sing, lovely one, I beg, no more’. We even know that Pushkin proposed to Anna, but eventually they never got married.
