The bombings also highlighted concerns between the European Union and the United States over the protection of commercial ships transiting the key Red Sea route. The EU governments are still unwilling to put their fleets under US command.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey, a NATO member, criticised the strikes as “not proportional,“ despite widespread concern about their deterrent value. All of these represent disproportionate use of force.“
“It’s as if they want to turn the Red Sea into a massacre,“ he explained.
Countries and armed organisations backed by Tehran have accused the US and UK of violating Yemen’s sovereignty. Russia urged the recall of the UN Security Council.
Saudi Arabia, which has been in peace talks with Yemen’s Houthis for the past year, released a statement calling for escalation to be avoided, adding that it was monitoring the situation with “with worry.“ It stated: “The kingdom underlines the importance of sustaining the security and stability of the Red Sea region, since unrestricted passage in it is an international need.“
Riyadh is deeply anxious that the strikes may destabilise the delicate plans it has drafted and submitted to the UN to establish a new national Yemeni government in which the Houthi rebels will be legitimised, allowing Saudi Arabia to withdraw from its nine-year campaign to smash them.
Oman, another major mediator in Yemen’s long-running civil war, expressed “concern“ over the raids on Houthi rebel military targets, which the Houthis say killed five people.
The Gulf sultanate “can only condemn the use of military force by friendly countries“ as Israel waged war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip, according to a foreign ministry official. “Oman has warned multiple times about the potential of the regional crisis escalating as a result of Israel’s continued assault against the Palestinian territory,“ it stated.
