• General Mahamat Idriss Déby, the leader of Chad’s military junta, has declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election in May 2024, despite accusations that his forces assassinated his main opponent, Yaya Dillo, in an “execution“ prior to the vote. • Déby Itno’s consolidation of power has involved the bloody repression of protests, the silencing of opposition figures, and the co-opting of potential rivals, including former adversaries like Saleh Kebzabo and Succes Masra. • While Chad faces ongoing rebellions and internal divisions within the ruling Zaghawa ethnic group, the country’s situation mirrors a broader trend of democratic backsliding in West and Central Africa, with Senegal’s postponement of its presidential election joining a series of coups and attempted coups in the region. • This rise in coups is attributed to factors such as poverty, political instability, corruption, violent extremism, and the “coup trap“ phenomenon. • The withdrawal of French and European troops from the Sahel region further complicates matters, creating a security vacuum that can be exploited by private military companies and external actors. • Coup leaders in the region are learning from and supporting each other, employing strategies like delay tactics, scapegoating regional blocs or foreign powers, and building alliances with like-minded allies to withstand international pressure. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Let’s come together in reasonable dialogue to honour our ancestors and reclaim the world through an African lens.
