An island is on fire in Greece: an urgent evacuation is being carried out

Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world Ideal conditions for fires in southern Europe have been created by abnormally high temperatures over the past month. Dry conditions, recently stronger winds and a long period of lack of precipitation have caused fires in Spain and the Balkans. On the island of Euboea in Greece, more than 400 firefighters are extinguishing a large fire, residents of three villages have been urgently evacuated. The fire was reported by Vasilios Vatrakoyannis, a representative of the Greek Fire Service, at an extraordinary briefing. As noted, the fire began in a forest area near the village of Petries in the afternoon. Due to strong winds in the region, it immediately assumed dangerous proportions. Police forces were sent to assist in the evacuation of residents of the villages of Krieza, Koskina and Petries. In addition to professional firefighters, a large number of volunteers and 56 units of special equipment are involved in extinguishing the fire. 28 aircraft (17 planes and 11 helicopters) were allocated to extinguish the fire from the air. As a precaution, a fireboat was sent to the scene of the emergency. The Coast Guard mobilized watercraft near the coastline. The work of all firefighting forces is coordinated by the mobile operational center “Olympos“. According to the operational center of the fire service, 67 landscape fires were recorded in Greece over the past 24 hours. 49 of them were extinguished at the initial stage, 18 fires are still being extinguished. However, it is unlikely that the number of forest fires throughout southern Europe will decrease until the weather conditions that contribute to fires change.
