Massive forest fires in Attica, Greece Two large forest fires broke out during the day near Athens in Greece. The first fire broke out in the Varnávas area and quickly spread through farmland and forests. Private estates and rural buildings caught fire. The fire, caused by hot and windy weather, broke through the trees. Houses and vehicles were caught in the fire, leaving a thick cloud of smoke. Due to the fire’s proximity to urban areas, evacuations were quickly ordered throughout the region. More than 400 firefighters, supported by 16 water-dropping aircraft and 13 helicopters, fought the fire. While firefighters brought the fire in western Attica under control, a second fire northeast of Athens continued to burn out of control. As darkness fell, the inferno reportedly moved east. Temperatures in the area remain high. Temperatures in Greece are expected to rise to a peak of 39°C (102°F) on Monday. The forest fire season is just beginning, which forces the authorities to resort to preparations for them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The channel lists such natural disasters as: 1) Geological emergencies: Earthquake, volcanic eruption, mudflow, landslide, landfall, avalanche; 2) Hydrological emergencies: Flood, Tsunami, Limnological catastrophe, floods, flooding; 3) Fires: Forest fire, Peat fire, Glass Fire, Wildfire; 4) Meteorological emergencies: Tornado, Cyclone, Blizzard, Hail, Drought, Hail, Hurricane, Storm, Thunderstorm, typhoon, Tempest, Lightning.
