Updating Steam from the retail Half-Life 2 DVD

Steam launched in September 2003, but was not necessary for most Valve games. This changed with the release of Half-Life 2 in November 2004. All copies of the game needed to be activated on Steam, including DVD copies. As a result, all retail copies of Half-Life 2 included an installer for an early version of Steam. Surprisingly, even after nearly 15 years, this version is still able to connect to Valve’s servers and update to the latest version available (with a bit of patience!)
