Expressive portrait painting demonstration by Aleksey Vaynshteyn

In this video I demonstrate how I paint a loose, expressive portrait in oil. I used a low resolution black and white photo by Roger Ballen from the series “Handyman“ as reference. I like using blurry, poor quality black and white photos as reference, because it frees me to express my own ideas of color and form into the painting. See my available painting:
