U.S. Navy: World’s Most Advanced Navy’s Dream of 500 Ships in 2050

In December 2016, the U.S. Navy has set a goal for future force structure that includes achieving and maintaining a fleet of 355 manned ships of specific types and numbers. The 355-ship goal was thereafter made part of U.S. policy through National Defense Authorization Act. The 355-ship force-level goal is a figure for manned ships only. Smaller unmanned surface and subsurface vehicles have been used by the US Navy for many years, but they have not been considered ships in their own right in existing force-level goals.
