“The Song of Departure“ (Le Chant du départ), is a French revolutionary and patriotic song composed in 1794 by Étienne Méhul as the “Anthem to Liberty“ with the title supposedly being changed by Maximilien Robespierre himself. Due to its popularity among soldiers of the French Republic, the song would come to be nicknamed “the brother of La Marseillaise,“ even becoming the Presidential Hymn of France and later the national anthem under Napoleon Bonapart.
