How to tune a Ghanaian Gyil Xylophone - Africa Heartwood Project
In this short video, we show footage of James, one of our cultural artisans in Ghana, as he fine tunes a gyil (JEE-lee) , which is similar to a xylophone, marimba, or balafon. The gyil is made with smoked hardwood keys fixed to a wood and bamboo frame with calabash gourds positioned under the keys to amplify and tune the sound.
