The Gold of Thrace: the Panagyurishte Treasure

Join us for a talk on the extraordinary Panagyurishte Treasure from Bulgaria, found by chance in its namesake town by three brothers in 1949. This banqueting set dates from around 300 BC and is comprised of nine richly-decorated gold vessels. Considered a national treasure, it’s a fine example of the rich archaeological heritage of ancient Thrace (which was split across present-day Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey). The Panagyurishte Treasure is a star loan in the exhibition Luxury and power: Persia to Greece - book tickets to view these stunning objects up close. At this special event, Prof Boni Petrunova, Director of the National Museum of History in Sofia, Bulgaria, discusses these exquisite objects along with other treasures discovered in Bulgaria, providing a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of the country.
