Bolling was a child prodigy; by the age of 14 he was playing jazz piano professionally with the likes of Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge, and Kenny Clarke. He was a major part of the traditional jazz revival in the late 60s, and he became friends with Oscar Peterson. Starting with his ’Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio’ in 1975, Bolling had a series of “crossover“ compositions.
