About Full Moon Day of Waso:
Full Moon Day of Waso is observed in the fourth month of the Burmese calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, it usually falls in July or August. It is observed on July 12 this year. It commemorates the anniversary of Lord Buddha’s first sermon in the Deer Park in Sarnath, India, over 2,500 years ago, similar to other holidays celebrated in other countries. This is also the first day of the three-month-long Buddhist Lent. Buddhists will refrain from eating meat, drinking alcohol, or smoking during this time. They gather at pagodas to offer flowers and new robes to monks.
Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon over 2,500 years ago in the Deer Park in Sarnath, India. Gautama Buddha outlined the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path in this sermon titled “Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion.“ According to the sermon, there are four universal Noble Truths: the existence of suffering, the cause of suffering, the possibility of ending the cause of suffering, and the path to the end of suffering. He proposed that following the Middle Path, or the Noble Eightfold Path, could end a person’s suffering: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right concentration. Following this path would allow a person to liberate themselves from suffering and achieve nirvana.
