Nichols was an American actress, singer, and dancer whose portrayal of Uhura was groundbreaking for African-American actresses on American television. Nichols was among the first Black women featured in a major television series. Her role as Lt. Nyota Uhura was groundbreaking. Uhura comes from Uhuru, the Swahili word for “freedom.“ Nichols was born on December 28, 1932, in Robbins, Illinois, near Chicago. She died on July 30, 2022.
