Save Custom Shaders/Node Groups into Startup File: Blender 2.8
To save your custom shader so you can re-use it whenever you want...
1. Group the shader by selecting all relevant nodes (not the material output) and press ctrl G
2. Connect Node Inputs to the “Group Input“ node
3. Rename the node (Press N to bring up the properties panel)
4. Save your file.
5. Open a new blender file, then go file... append... and open the file you had just saved. In the next menu, choose “NodeTree“ and then select the Group Node you had just saved.
6. Go to the shader editor and press Shift A... then under “Group“, click the name of your Node Group to add it.
7. Click the Shield Icon next to the node’s name (“Add Fake User“, saves the node even if it has no users) then delete the node.
8. Set your file how you want it to look upon startup, then go to File... Defaults... Save Startup File (or press Ctrl U)
9. Now the group is a part of your startup file and you can add it whenever you want.
