To Begin NAGISO WOODTURNING Work, The Material Trees are around 100 Years Old and Dried for 10 Years

In the last 2 months, I’ve decided to take a trip to learn about Japanese wood craftsmanship. Let’s now come to the Nagiso Town of Nagano Prefecture and learn about Hikimono or WoodTurning in Japan. The beautiful grain of broad-leaved trees in zelkova, conker, castor aralia and katsura, and so on – is used as natural patterns. The material trees are around 100 years old. The trees hewed out from mountains are first to cut into big pieces depending on the size of each product, then ground roughly and dried, sometimes for more than 10 years. By doing so, one can prevent distortion, which can occur during the production process or after use. As Mr. Nohara, president of Nagiso Lathed Woodcrafts Cooperative has been said: “A feature of lathe craft in Nagiso is to keep the beauty of the wood grain. It’s important to judge wood just by watching raw wood.
