Welcome to another Motown Monday! William “Smokey“ Robinson was born February 19, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan. As a child, he met a young Aretha Franklin when he was five. He learned to love music he heard on the radio and began singing along, joining a succession of vocal groups the last being The Matadors in 1958. It was this group that got signed to End Records by Berry Gordy and released their first single “Got A Job“ an answer song to the then popular Silhouettes single “Get A Job“. Then Berry signed them to his Tamla Records, which would be renamed Motown a few years later. They were the first act to be signed to the label and helped to define the Motown sound. Berry was impressed by Smokey’s vocal abilities and his immense talent in writing songs he proved by presenting a book of his 100 compositions he wrote while still in high school.
