Beethoven Sonata No. 12 in A-flat Major, Op. 26 3rd Movement “Funeral March“

This Sonata was published in 1802 with the title “Grand Sonata“, and this wonderful work surely deserves this title. It is dedicated to Prince Karl von Lichnowsky, just like the famous Pathetique Sonata, Op. 13. Ludwig van Beethoven used this sonata as an experimental work, as he uses new material and concepts. This sonata is Beethoven’s first that includes pedaling indications. It is also the earliest sonata with Beethoven’s autograph (the hand-written manuscript). This is the third movement of the sonata, and Beethoven gave it a special title: Funeral March on the Death of a Hero. Scholars have tried to guess who the hero is in Beethoven’s title, but the answer is unclear. Its sturcture is in a simple A B A form. This performance is by G. Smith.
