Butterfly painted lady and Lilac - Preview Billy Showell ⎮Watercolour Beautiful

To try this weeks tutorial in full sign up here This week we return to a spot of natural history to add to our botanical paintings and another mix of mediums. This pretty ‘painted lady’ butterfly sitting on a Lilac stem is a wonderfully small and delicate study to paint. Making the finest lines with a size 1 brush, and keeping your brush on its tip-toe, we will build the lovely rainbow of colours and fine hairs on the butterfly. The technique we use is similar to dry brushing but just a little wetter to help create the smoothness to the fine lines we need. To finish the study, we add the Lilac flowers in pencil and tone, in a particular style and angle of line, something new to try but of course, always optional. Maybe you have caught a photo of this beautiful butterfly on a favourite plant and can recreate a charming moment from nature for yourself? Wishing you peace always, sunshine, rain, and a little moment to yourself. Billy x
