In the foothills of the impressive Grampian mountains in the fertile valley of the River Ericht sits the market town of Blairgowrie. This bustling town is one of the Angus gateways, a junction between the roads from the south via Dundee and Perth, meeting the roads to the north and east, routes to the east coast and the Moray Firth. The town has always attracted a wide range of people – mill workers, farm workers, travellers, hill walkers and tourists. With this in mind it is not surprising that the area is known for its musical heritage. In 1950’s Hamish Henderson of the school of Scottish studies in Edinburgh embarked on a collecting trip gathering many recordings of the inhabitants. In particular those of the Stewart family – Belle, Sheila, Cathie, and Alex.
