Valentin Alexandrovich Serov was born in St Petersburg Russia and became one of the most popular artists of his generation. He painted nobility and he was from an intellectual family as well, his father was a composer, and his Mother a singer. He showed signs of artistic ability at an early age and was fortunately able to study under the great painter Ilya Repin. Serov would also find interest in Iluustrarion work later in life and was widely traveled.
