Stutthof Concentration Camp was opened by the SS following the outbreak out the Second World War and the German invasion of Poland. As soon as the invasion occurred people were being imprisoned and held at Stutthof. It was a camp where 110,000 people were held inside of and around 65,000 prisoners never made it out of the barbed wire fences. Executions were carried out on a daily basis at Stutthof on the firing range, and also doctors would execute patients. It was a place where inmates were forced to conduct back breaking work for the German war effort.
But after the end of the Second World War, there were a number of war crimes trials that sentenced a small percentage of the former guards of Stutthof to death. Their executions took place on a huge gallows in Gdansk on a hill in front of a huge crowd. But many guards escaped justice, and some such as Herta Bothe were spared the hangman as she committed crimes also at other camps.
