The kāne of Kawailiʻulā, under the direction of Chinky Māhoe, perform “Ka ʻOni A Ka Moku”. Written by famed composer and former leader of the Royal Hawaiian band, Henry (or Henri) Berger, this mele describes the many emotions felt when meeting with oneʻs lover. Something as simple as a companionʻs fragrance can sometimes be enough to keep one awake at night. It is said that Berger wrote this mele to describe his personal, seemingly complicated, relationship with Queen Lili’okalani, and the whirlwind of emotions this relationship caused him.“
