Why the Indian Ocean’s Saya de Malha bank is so incredibly special
In the heart of the Indian Ocean, there is a hidden underwater bank teeming with life. The Saya de Malha Bank is home to pygmy blue whales, flying fish and the world’s largest seagrass meadow. It’s also one of the biggest carbon sinks in the ocean, locking away carbon that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
But our global oceans are under unprecedented pressure - from pollution, industrial fishing and climate breakdown. And this incredible place is no exception.
The Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise has been at the Saya de Malha Bank with an international team of scientists, to map and research the wildlife that lives and breeds here.
To remain fiercely unbiased, Greenpeace is 100% independently funded by supporters just like you.
