Difficult rescue after ’heartbreaking’ whale stranding | ABC News

Marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta says time is running out for dozens of pilot whales that are stranded on a beach in Western Australia’s Great Southern region. At least 51 pilot whales have died so far and rescuers have spent the day desperately trying to refloat another 45 pilot whales who survived the mass stranding at Cheynes Beach, near Albany, almost 500 kilometres south of Perth. Parks and Wildlife Incident Controller Peter Hartley said two whale experts were painstakingly examining each of the animals, before an attempt to float the surviving animals back out to sea.
