Indonesia NOW! Mount Ruang Volcano Eruption. Dramatic Footage and Updates
On April 16, the eruption of Mount Ruang began in the North Sulawesi province of Indonesia. According to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, more than 1000 earthquakes occurred in the two days leading up to the eruption.
On Tuesday, the volcano spewed lava, and the column of smoke rose more than a mile into the sky. The eruption was accompanied by explosions and volcanic lightning. By Wednesday morning, over 4000 lightning strikes had been registered around Ruang.
On Wednesday, the volcano’s activity increased, and it ejected ash up to a height of 8.5 miles. Consequently, the alert level was raised to its maximum. According to reports from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sitaro district, the eruption of Mount Ruang caused ashfall accompanied by flying hot rocks and gravel, resulting in several casualties among residents on the coast of Tagulandang. Jendri Pendong, a representative of the local search and rescue agency, stated, “Last night people evacuated on their own, but without direction due to the volcano’s eruption and falling materials like small rocks, so people scattered to find evacuation routes.“ He said that 20 staff members were helping evacuate residents from the coast near the volcano using rubber boats.
828 people were evacuated from nearby villages Pumpente Village and Pathology Village in the Tagulandang District.
Due to the spread of volcanic ash, which could endanger flight safety, the international airport in Manado City, located over 100 kilometers from the volcano, was closed. Additionally, volcanic ash disrupted communication and signaling networks in the village of Laingpatehi. On Wednesday evening, authorities expanded the exclusion zone around the crater from 2.5 to 3.7 miles, warning tourists and local residents to stay outside its limits.
Authorities fear that part of the mountain could collapse into the sea and trigger a tsunami.
On Thursday, an evacuation was announced for 11,000 residents of the surrounding area, including Tagulandang Island, where approximately 20,000 people reside. Local authorities declared a state of emergency for 14 days from April 16 to 29.
The greatest danger in the coming years is volcanic eruptions worldwide. The reason is that magma is beginning to rise from great depths in recent years.
This rapid rise of magma is caused by its anomalous heating originating from the Earth’s core. This process has an avalanche-like nature and will only increase, leading to an increase in the number and duration of volcanic eruptions.
This means that any active or even dormant volcano can suddenly become activated, practically without visible precursors to eruption.
