(1 Jan 1995) In a fiery battle for control of Chechnya’s capital, Russian
soldiers attacked rebel positions with artillery, tank and rocket
fire on Sunday (1/1).Burned-out Russian tanks littered the square outside Chechnya’s presidential headquarters. In fighting on New Year’s eve, at least two tanks were destroyed near Minutka Square, about 700 metres west of the presidential palace.
