Sucking reflex for newborn / infants for pediatric nursing assessments. Babies are born with certain reflexes that you’ll want to know as a nurse working in pediatrics. As a nursing student, you’ll also need to know the common newborn/infant reflexes for nursing exams such as the NCLEX-RN.
In the early phases of life, this reflex is involuntary (automatic). However, around four months of age or so, this reflex disappears, and the infant can suck voluntarily.
