wi-fi Concert for mobile phones
In this performance a unique spatial acoustic effect has been achieved by hundred simultaneous sounding mobile phones. All devices were connected to a wireless network and organized into one large polyphonic multichannel synthesizer, which was used to reproduce different sounds from random locations of the concert hall. Real-time communication was done in the browser of the device and no additional software was used on the client side. A musical piece itself is performed live by the author with Kinect sensor and MIDI controllers, connected to a server, communicating with all cellular phones. Sound structure of the piece is due to capabilities of the system. Different sounds are used as a source: noises, samples, synthesizers, e. t. c. Also the phone choir is complemented by the multichannel loudspeaker system, which is used to amplify low-frequency sounds and specific sound effects.
