Saxophonist, composer, music producer and promoter, Turk Ilhan Ersahin is one of the most active professionals in contemporary jazz world. He released dozens of albums as the leader of various line-ups and played a significant role in the New York underground scene during the 2000s as the founder and owner of the famous club Nublu and later the eponymous record label and festival.
Ersahin (1965) was born and raised in Stockholm, listening to a wide range of music, from Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones to punk rock and reggae, to Miles and Coltrane. He started studies at the Berklee College, but quickly moved to New York and took part in the Big Apple’s club life. In 1998 he formed the band Wax Poetic, blending jazz, electronic music and spoken word, with young Norah Jones on vocals.
