A LYRA VIOL PENTAMERON - Liam Byrne

This short, self-recorded film was made for Dartington International Summer School in July 2021, when I couldn’t be there in person. The original plan for my time at @Dartington Trust was to explore 17th-century domestic musical practice without putting on normal concerts, and this set of 5 pieces for solo lyra viol attempts to convey a bit of that vibe. The viol was made by Marc Soubeyran in 2012 and is a copy of the small John Rose bass in the Kessler collection. The strings are from Valentin Oelmüller at Pure Corde, and the bow is by Gerhard Landwehr. Each of these three master craftsmen has influenced my playing and understanding of this repertoire more than I can express in words. 1:14 Daniel Farrant - Fantasy 7:45 Jenkins - Almain 10:48 Simon Ives - La Cloche 11:26 Anonymous Fantasy 16:15 Unser müden Augenlider Gefördert von der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien im Rahmen von NEUSTART KULTUR
